Politics Count and You Matter
By Phil Salkin, Government Affairs Director

As we go through turbulent times, it is important to remember that we have multiple levels of government. They are all interrelated and they are all important to our Association and our Members. We're familiar with what is going on at the federal level with massive spending to stabilize the banks, programs to deal with the rise in foreclosures and other initiatives in areas such as health-care and taxation. On the state level, we are waiting to see how the 5.7 billion dollar deficit will sort itself out and where the taxes will fall. We are tracking budget and legislative proposals just as those relating to working farmlands and the creation of regional transportation authorities. On the local level we are concerned with County shoreland zoning initiatives and those relating to transportation, while trying to advance a positive agenda for affordable housing.

At each level of government, REALTORS® can help to make a difference. Come to REALTOR® and Government Day on April 8th. There, we¹ll hear from representatives from the NAR discuss some of the proposed changes at the federal level and how we can join our colleagues from around the country in fighting to reverse the proposal to level or eliminate the mortgage interest deduction for some homebuyers. REALTOR® and Government Day also provides us with the opportunity to visit with our state representatives during our visit to the State Capitol.

On April 7th, you can have a major impact on our local scene by getting out and voting. In the recent spring primary the statewide turnout was 6%. In Fitchburg, a winner was determined by pulling a name from a hat due to a tie vote. Every vote matters! With about 2,900 members, REALTORS® are a potentially powerful entity just by showing up to the polls. I say potentially, because if you don't show up, you have ceded that power to other groups who will be more than glad to select candidates beholden to them.

One of the spring races is for Dane County Executive. This is a powerful position with authority over land use, transportation decisions, public protection and other areas we are concerned with. This year, RASCW has endorsed Nancy Mistele for the position. This decision came only after an interview panel of the Government Affairs Committee met with Nancy and her opponent, Kathleen Falk. A recommendation was then made to our Board of Directors who considered the positions of both candidates and the record of Ms. Falk, the current executive. Their overwhelming support for Nancy was a clear vote of confidence in her ability to steer the County in the right direction.

With less than a month to go, make the investment in yourself, your family, your community and your business. Get out and help Nancy in her campaign and call me for information on other candidates we feel will make a positive contribution.
