Minority Scholarship – John Winters

How long have you been in real estate?
3 years

What made you want to pursue real estate as a career?
After looking through course materials while on the search for a job with flexibility, I discovered I had an interest in real estate.

What was one of your greatest challenges as a new agent?
Not knowing enough homebuyers – a majority of the people I knew were renters who were locked out of the market. Without having friends or family that were homebuyers to get my feet wet in this business, I lacked hands-on experience.

What do you feel were some of your greatest accomplishments early on?
Learning the business. The firm I first joined was full of training classes. Learning how to fill out forms and hosting other agents’ open houses prepared me for going out on my own.

What motivated you to apply for the RASCW Minority Scholarship?
At the time I did not have the funds to begin my career in real estate. Looking back, it probably took a whole year for me to get a client of my own. This scholarship gave me the opportunity to keep the little savings I had while my life transitioned over to that of a Realtor®.

What did receiving the RASCW Minority Scholarship mean to you?
At the time receiving that scholarship meant less stress and more stability while I made the switch to real estate. It meant I could start right away rather than delay a few months.

What helped you the most as a new agent?
Education, Education, Education! Learning how this business works is very important. Taking buyers on showings and studying the market. The more you talk about real estate the better.

What didn’t you have or know starting out that would have been helpful?
Since I did not know any homebuyers and it took me a while to get the hands-on experience, I would have joined a team right away or gone with a firm that provides leads.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a new REALTOR®?
Find your style! Every agent is different and there are many creative ways to move around in this business. Be yourself and make your mark.
